But from a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, these symptoms are signs that the body is out of balance — and acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are designed to help restore that balance naturally.

In TCM, perimenopause is viewed as a major transition in the body’s energy systems. Over time, the body’s nourishing Yin energy can become depleted, which may lead to symptoms such as heat, dryness, anxiety, poor sleep, and irritability. Stress, overwork, lack of rest, and years of putting everyone else first can also contribute to the body feeling depleted during this stage of life.

Acupuncture works by stimulating specific points on the body to regulate the nervous system, improve circulation, calm stress responses, and support the body’s natural ability to rebalance itself. Many women notice they begin sleeping better, feeling calmer, and experiencing fewer hot flashes after a series of treatments.

Research supports what many women have experienced firsthand. A meta-analysis published in the journal Menopause found that acupuncture significantly improved hot flash frequency and severity, along with overall quality of life during menopause and perimenopause.

Additional studies have shown acupuncture may also help improve sleep quality, anxiety, mood, and emotional wellbeing during this transition.

Chinese herbal medicine can also be incredibly supportive during perimenopause. In TCM, herbal formulas are customized to the individual rather than using the same approach for everyone. Some women may need support for sleep and anxiety, while others may need help with hot flashes, fatigue, digestion, or emotional overwhelm.

Research on Chinese herbal medicine has shown promising results for symptoms such as hot flashes, fatigue, mood changes, and sleep disturbances.

The most important thing to understand is that perimenopause is not “all in your head,” and you do not need to simply push through it exhausted and depleted. Your body is changing, and it deserves support during that transition.

At Wellness on 1st, we take a holistic and individualized approach to women’s health. Whether you are trying to conceive naturally or preparing for assisted treatments such as IVF, many people are looking for ways to support their bodies in a more holistic and gentle way. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), including acupuncture and herbal medicine, has been used for centuries to support reproductive health by addressing the root causes of imbalance and helping the body return to a more optimal state.

A Holistic Approach to Fertility
In TCM, fertility is not viewed as an isolated issue. It is closely connected to the overall balance of the body, including the health of the menstrual cycle, digestion, sleep, stress levels, and emotional well-being. Rather than focusing on a single symptom or diagnosis, acupuncture works to regulate the body as a whole. This may include improving blood flow to the reproductive organs, supporting hormone balance, and calming the nervous system.

Conditions such as PCOS, endometriosis, irregular cycles, and painful periods are often signs of underlying patterns in the body. From a TCM perspective, these may be related to imbalances such as Qi stagnation, blood deficiency, or dampness. By identifying and treating these patterns, we can support a more regular cycle and create a healthier environment for conception.

How Acupuncture Supports Reproductive Health
Acupuncture helps regulate the nervous system and reduce stress, which plays a significant role in fertility. It can also support circulation, particularly to the uterus and ovaries, which is essential for follicle development and a healthy uterine lining. Many patients also notice improvements in sleep, digestion, and energy levels, all of which contribute to overall reproductive health.

One commonly used point combination in fertility treatments is Spleen 4 (Sp4) and Pericardium 6 (Pc6). Together, these points activate the Chong and Yin Wei meridians, which are deeply connected to the reproductive system and the regulation of blood and hormones. This combination helps nourish the uterus, support implantation, and regulate the menstrual cycle.

The Ren meridian, known as the “Sea of Yin,” is a central channel in Traditional Chinese Medicine that flows along the midline of the body and has a profound connection to the uterus and reproductive system. It nourishes Yin, regulates the uterus, and supports the flow of Qi and Blood—both essential for a healthy menstrual cycle and optimal fertility. When the Ren is balanced and flowing freely, it helps create a stable, nourished internal environment that supports conception, implantation, and a healthy pregnancy.

Individualized Treatment Matters
No two fertility journeys are the same, which is why each acupuncture treatment is tailored to the individual. Your practitioner will consider your cycle, symptoms, medical history, and overall health when creating a treatment plan. Treatments may shift throughout different phases of the menstrual cycle to best support ovulation, implantation, and hormonal balance.

For those undergoing IVF or other assisted reproductive therapies, acupuncture can be used alongside medical treatment to help improve outcomes and reduce stress during the process.

Supporting a Healthy Pregnancy and Labour
Acupuncture is not only helpful for conception but can also support a healthy pregnancy. Treatments can help manage symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, and anxiety, while continuing to support the body as it changes. In later stages of pregnancy, acupuncture may also be used to help prepare the body for labour by encouraging proper energy flow and relaxation.

A Gentle and Supportive Approach
At Wellness on 1st, we take a compassionate and individualized approach to fertility care. Acupuncture offers a natural way to support your body, regulate your cycle, and create the conditions needed for conception. Whether you are just beginning your journey or have been trying for some time, this approach works to support you every step of the way.

-- Dr. Danielle Neilson, Dr. Ac of Radiance Acupuncture

O is for Ovarian Cysts: Restoring Flow and Balance with Acupuncture

https://www.wellnesson1st.com/calgary-wellness-blog/o-is-for-ovarian-cysts-restoring-flow-and-balance-with-acupuncture

https://www.wellnesson1st.com/calgary-wellness-blog/o-is-for-ovarian-cysts-restoring-flow-and-balance-with-acupuncture#comments

Acupuncture Education Series

Ovarian cysts are very common, and many women will experience them at some point in their lives. Stress, poor sleep, and lifestyle factors can all play a role. In Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), we look at it a little differently. Instead of focusing only on the cyst itself, we look at what’s happening in the body that allowed it to form in the first place.
Often, this can include:

Poor circulation in the pelvic area

Hormonal imbalance

Stress and tension affecting the body

Digestive issues that lead to fluid buildup

When energy (Qi) and blood aren’t moving properly, the body can develop areas of stagnation—and over time, that can contribute to things like cysts.

How Acupuncture Can Help
Acupuncture works by helping your body return to a more balanced, natural state. It doesn’t just target the cyst—it supports your whole system.

Regulates hormones: Acupuncture can help bring your cycle back into balance, which is key for preventing and managing cysts.

Improves circulation: Better blood flow to the ovaries and uterus helps the body reabsorb fluid and reduce stagnation.

Reduces pain and pressure: Many women notice a decrease in pelvic pain, bloating, and discomfort after just a few treatments.

Calms the nervous system: Stress plays a bigger role than most people realize. Acupuncture helps shift your body out of “fight or flight” and into a relaxed state where healing can happen.

Treatments are tailored specifically to you. Your Doctor of Acupuncture will choose points based on your symptoms, cycle, and overall health.

Most treatment plans involve a series of sessions over a few weeks or months, depending on how long symptoms have been present. This isn’t a quick fix—but it’s a powerful way to support long-term healing.

The Bottom Line
Ovarian cysts are common, but they shouldn’t be something you just “live with.” If you’re dealing with pain, irregular cycles, or ongoing discomfort, your body is asking for support. Acupuncture offers a natural, gentle way to help regulate hormones, improve circulation, and reduce symptoms—while supporting your overall health at the same time. It sounds intimidating — but understanding it is the first step toward managing it.
Let’s break it down.

What is Neuropathy?
Peripheral neuropathy refers to damage or dysfunction of the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. These nerves help you feel sensation, control movement, and regulate many automatic body processes. When they are not working properly, the signals between your brain and body become disrupted.
Neuropathy isn’t a single condition — it’s an umbrella term for many nerve disorders. It can affect sensory nerves (feeling), motor nerves (movement), or autonomic nerves (automatic functions like sweating or digestion).

Common Symptoms
Neuropathy often develops slowly and can feel different for each person. Some of the most common symptoms include:

Tingling or “pins and needles”

Burning or sharp nerve pain

Numbness or reduced sensation

Sensitivity to touch

Changes in temperature sensation

Symptoms often begin in the feet or hands and gradually move upward.

What Causes Neuropathy?
There are many possible causes, and sometimes more than one factor is involved. The most common include:

Diabetes

Chemotherapy treatments

Vitamin deficiencies (especially B12)

Thyroid disorders

Alcohol use

Autoimmune conditions

Injuries or nerve compression

Idiopathic (no clear cause)

Neuropathy Through the Lens of Chinese Medicine
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), neuropathy is often viewed as a problem of Qi and Blood circulation. When circulation is reduced or blocked, nerves and tissues are not properly nourished. Over time, this can lead to numbness, tingling, pain, or weakness. Acupuncture aims to restore this flow and support the body’s natural healing processes.

Modern research is beginning to show parallels with this perspective. Studies suggest acupuncture may improve blood flow, stimulate nerve pathways, and support nerve regeneration — which is especially helpful for chemotherapy-induced neuropathy.

Can Acupuncture Help Neuropathy?
Research into acupuncture for neuropathy continues to grow. While more large studies are needed, the existing evidence is encouraging. Clinical reviews show acupuncture has demonstrated benefits for several neuropathic conditions, particularly diabetic neuropathy, chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, and carpal tunnel syndrome.

Recent research suggests acupuncture may:

Reduce numbness and nerve pain

Improve nerve conduction and sensation

Increase blood flow to nerves

Support nerve repair and regeneration

Many patients also appreciate that acupuncture has fewer side effects compared to medications commonly used for nerve pain. Treatment typically involves a series of sessions, with gradual improvement over time as nerves recover and circulation improves.

Supporting Chemotherapy-Induced Neuropathy
For those experiencing neuropathy after chemotherapy, acupuncture can be especially beneficial as part of a broader supportive plan. Many patients combine acupuncture with other gentle, evidence-informed strategies to improve nerve health and quality of life:

Nutritional support: Vitamins like B12, B6, and alpha-lipoic acid can help support nerve repair.

Physical therapy & gentle exercise: Stretching, balance exercises, and low-impact movement can maintain muscle strength and improve circulation.

Topical therapies: Products like White Flower Oil ((a Traditional Chinese Medicine topical with menthol and herbal oils) or Medistik Roll‑On – Natural Ice Therapy may provide temporary relief from tingling or burning sensations.

Mind-body practices: Meditation, relaxation techniques, and breathwork can help manage pain perception and improve overall wellbeing.

Acupuncture complements these approaches by promoting blood flow, supporting nerve regeneration, and helping reduce discomfort. Many patients find that a combination of these therapies leads to gradual, meaningful improvement in nerve function and daily comfort.

Exploring Your Options
Neuropathy can feel frustrating, unpredictable, and sometimes overwhelming. But there is hope. Whether the goal is reducing pain, improving sensation, or slowing progression, integrative care can play an important role.

Acupuncture works best as part of a holistic approach — supporting the nervous system while addressing underlying causes whenever possible, including chemotherapy-induced nerve damage.

At Wellness on 1st, our Doctors of Acupuncture can guide you through personalized treatment plans tailored to your needs. It's about creating the conditions in your body where conception can thrive. Think of it like tending to a garden before you plant a seed, you want to make sure the soil is rich, nourished, and ready. That's what we're doing here.

Start with the Foundations
Before we talk about supplements or specialized testing, let's talk about the basics because these matter more than most people realize.

Sleep is where your body repairs, regulates hormones, and resets. Consistently poor sleep disrupts cortisol, melatonin, and reproductive hormones like LH and FSH. Aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep and try to keep a consistent sleep schedule. Your hormones love rhythm.

Stress is one of the most underestimated barriers to conception. When your body is in a chronic stress state, it prioritizes survival over reproduction - remember the gut-brain axis? The same principle applies here. Elevated cortisol can interfere with ovulation, reduce progesterone, and affect sperm quality. This isn't about eliminating stress entirely (impossible), but finding ways to genuinely down-regulate your nervous system: walking in nature, breathwork, therapy, acupuncture, or simply protecting your rest.

Movement matters, but more is not always better when it comes to fertility. Moderate, consistent movement:, think walking, yoga, swimming, or strength training a few days a week, supports circulation, hormone balance, and healthy body composition.

Nutrition is one of the most powerful levers you have. Focus on whole, anti-inflammatory foods: plenty of colorful vegetables, quality proteins (eggs, fish, legumes, pasture-raised meats), healthy fats like avocado, olive oil, and fatty fish, and complex carbohydrates that keep your blood sugar stable. Blood sugar balance is quietly one of the most important factors in hormonal health. Sharp spikes and crashes throughout the day can disrupt insulin, which in turn affects estrogen and progesterone. Limit or reduce alcohol, ultra-processed foods, excess caffeine, and sugar. These substances can elevate inflammation, disrupt hormonal signaling, and deplete key nutrients your reproductive system depends on.

Track Your Cycle Understanding your cycle is one of the most empowering things you can do when trying to conceive. Many people were taught that ovulation happens on day 14, but that's based on a textbook 28-day cycle, which isn't the reality for everyone.

Fertility awareness methods, including tracking basal body temperature (BBT), cervical mucus changes, and using LH predictor strips, can help you identify your actual fertile window. Apps like Natural Cycles or Tempdrop can be helpful tools, but the goal is to become familiar with your body's patterns.

If your cycles are irregular, very short, very long, or you're not seeing clear signs of ovulation, this is important information and something a naturopathic doctor can help investigate further.

Address What Might Be Getting in the Way
Sometimes there are underlying factors that, when addressed, make a significant difference. Common ones I look at in practice include:

Thyroid health. The thyroid is deeply connected to reproductive function. Even subclinical hypothyroidism - where levels are technically "normal" but not optimal can affect ovulation and early pregnancy.

Iron and ferritin levels. Low ferritin (stored iron) is associated with anovulation. Many women are told their iron is "fine" when their ferritin is actually quite low.

Hormonal imbalances like estrogen dominance, low progesterone, or elevated androgens (common in PCOS) can all interfere with conception.

Gut health. Poor gut health can contribute to estrogen dominance, which impacts fertility.

Environmental toxins. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in plastics, conventional produce, personal care products, and cookware can interfere with hormonal signalling. Switching to glass or stainless steel containers, choosing organic when possible, and reviewing your personal care products are practical steps worth taking.

Trying to Conceive is a Team Effort!
Fertility is not just a female conversation. Sperm health accounts for a significant portion of fertility challenges, and yet it often goes unaddressed until much later in the process. Sperm takes approximately 72–90 days to mature, which means that what your partner does today affects sperm quality three months from now.

Key areas to address for sperm health include reducing heat exposure (hot tubs, laptops on laps), limiting alcohol, quitting smoking, addressing nutritional deficiencies, managing stress, and getting adequate sleep. A semen analysis is a straightforward starting point if you haven't done one already.

Give It Time & Get Support
The general recommendation is to try for 12 months before pursuing further investigation if you're under 35, or 6 months if you're 35 or older. But that doesn't mean you have to wait to start supporting your body. The three to six months before you begin actively trying, sometimes called the "preconception window," is one of the most valuable times to work with a practitioner and optimize your health.

This journey can bring up a lot of emotions, and it's okay to ask for support. Whether that's from a partner, a community, a therapist, or your healthcare team, you don't have to navigate this alone.

If you're trying to conceive and want personalized support, I'd love to help you build a plan that's tailored to your body and your goals. Book a free 15 min discovery call and let's start the conversation.

- Dr. Shreya Mistry, ND

The information in this post is for educational purposes only and is not a substitute for personalized medical advice. It involves a specific part of the immune system (IgE antibodies) and usually happens within minutes to a few hours after eating the food. I like to think of it as a fire alarm response in the body. All it takes is contact with the specific food allergen and our body sounds the alarm to let us know something is wrong. Because food allergies can be life-threatening, they require strict avoidance and medical management, often under the care of an allergist.

Common food allergens include:

Peanuts

Tree nuts

Shellfish

Fish

Eggs

Milk

Symptoms of food allergies may include:

Anaphylaxis (a medical emergency)

Hives or itching

Swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat

Difficulty breathing

Vomiting

What Is a Food Sensitivity?
A food sensitivity (delayed food reaction) is much more subtle and far more common. Unlike allergies, food sensitivities do not involve IgE antibodies and often cause delayed symptoms, appearing hours or even days later. This delay is why food sensitivities can be so hard to identify. Foods like gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, corn, and certain additives are frequent triggers—but sensitivities are highly individual. I like to think of food sensitivities as a pot of boiling water on the stove. You have your eyes on it and turn away for one quick second and suddenly it overflows.

Common symptoms of food sensitivities include:

Bloating or gas

Abdominal discomfort

Diarrhea or constipation

Headaches or migraines

Brain fog

Fatigue

Joint pain

Skin issues (acne, eczema)

Hormonal or inflammatory symptoms

Why Food Sensitivities Happen
In naturopathic medicine, we often look at food sensitivities as a signal, not just a problem to suppress. Some common root contributors include:

Gut inflammation or increased intestinal permeability (“leaky gut”)

Imbalances in gut bacteria

Chronic stress

Hormonal imbalances

Repeated exposure to foods the body is struggling to process

When the gut is under stress, the immune system can start reacting to foods that were once tolerated just fine. It’s a condition that affects millions of people worldwide, often silently, until complications arise. While lifestyle changes like diet, exercise, and stress management remain the foundation of prevention and treatment, acupuncture can be a powerful complementary therapy in supporting overall metabolic health.

Acupuncture works by stimulating specific points on the body to regulate the flow of energy, or Qi, and balance the nervous system. For metabolic syndrome, acupuncture targets points that influence digestion, metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and circulation. By addressing these systems, acupuncture can help the body function more efficiently and support healthy metabolic processes. Clinical studies and traditional practice suggest that acupuncture can help reduce blood sugar levels, improve cholesterol and lipid profiles, lower blood pressure, and support healthy weight management, making it a valuable adjunct to conventional care.

Stress is a major contributor to metabolic syndrome. Chronic stress can trigger hormonal imbalances, increase inflammation, and interfere with sleep—all of which can make it harder for the body to maintain a healthy metabolism. Acupuncture is well-known for its calming effects on the nervous system. By stimulating specific points, it can reduce cortisol levels, ease tension, and promote restful sleep. These benefits are essential for people managing metabolic syndrome because stress reduction alone can help lower blood pressure, improve blood sugar control, and enhance overall health.

Acupuncture also supports energy regulation. Points associated with the liver, spleen, and kidney meridians are commonly used to enhance the body’s ability to process and store nutrients efficiently, improve circulation, and reduce inflammation. When the body can regulate energy more effectively, it responds better to lifestyle interventions such as exercise and dietary changes. This makes acupuncture a supportive therapy for creating long-term metabolic balance, rather than just addressing symptoms temporarily.

For anyone living with metabolic syndrome—or at risk for developing it—integrating acupuncture into a health routine can be a proactive and empowering step. Combined with healthy eating, regular physical activity, and stress management, acupuncture provides natural, gentle, and effective support for achieving better metabolic health and overall vitality.

-- Dr. Susan Newman, Dr. Ac

Low Back Pain with Sciatica - The New "S" Word

https://www.wellnesson1st.com/calgary-wellness-blog/low-back-pain-with-sciatica

https://www.wellnesson1st.com/calgary-wellness-blog/low-back-pain-with-sciatica#comments

Manual Osteopathy

Pain is one of the most debilitating factors in our health. When your spouse says, “You are getting on my nerves,” they are not kidding; you can literally aggravate someone’s nerves so much that the nerve reacts, which causes pain or discomfort in the body. The longest nerve in the body is called the sciatic nerve. It starts in the lower back (L4) and continues behind the spine, passing through the buttocks, the back of the thigh, and into the lower leg, ending in the toes.

If you drop a pencil and go to pick it up and are met with a sharp pain electrifying down to the back of the thigh (which may or may not continue into the foot), then you know the full potential of the sciatic nerve when it is angry.

Calm down the nerve to resolve the pain.

Ensure we identify the cause and treat it effectively to prevent recurrence in the future.

Both goals are possible with the right dedication and commitment. If you start to notice pain that is dull, achy, throbbing, or sharp in the low back and radiating to the back of the knee, it can be an internal mechanism (such as a disc bulge) or something mechanical (such as a muscle flare-up). Either way, the sooner we pay attention to the pain, the better. Pain is a good indicator that dysfunction exists within the body. Remember, the goal of treatment is to resolve the pain and ensure this does not happen again.

We live in a world that is too busy—often hectic—with many different commitments on our plate. If we are stopped due to pain or an inability to complete the tasks we need to accomplish, the effects are more than just physical flare-ups.

It is my deep obligation to patient care and my respect for how constantly we are on the move that led me to design a treatment plan geared toward pain resolution and prevention. My treatment plan protocol for sciatica (pending patient candidacy) is proving effective for a return to work sooner than some patients anticipate.

Why Does It Matter to Resolve Pain Quickly?
Optimal health allows us to achieve our goals. When pain exists, it becomes an obstacle blocking you from living as you would like to. I have seen too many beautiful spirits in patients become broken, and preventable secondary symptoms emerge, such as anxiety, depression, weight gain due to pain-related lack of mobility, and financial duress due to a non-working status.

If any of these symptoms describe you, give my treatment protocol a fighting chance. Come in with an open mind and a commitment to compliance with the treatment… and I can handle the rest.

-- Dr. Salma Mitha, DOMP, DC, SRISD, Cert. It’s often a combination of muscle tension, nervous system irritation, inflammation, stress, and poor movement patterns. When needles are placed into specific points, the body releases endorphins (natural painkillers), improves local blood flow, and down-regulates inflammation. This helps relax tight muscles, reduce nerve sensitivity, and restore normal movement patterns.

Acupuncture also shifts the body out of “fight or flight” mode. Chronic pain keeps the nervous system stuck in a heightened state, which amplifies pain signals. Acupuncture helps calm this response, allowing the body to heal instead of constantly protecting.

From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, low back pain is often linked to stagnation (poor circulation), weakness, or overuse. Treatment focuses not only on where the pain is felt, but why the body can’t recover.

What Types of Low Back Pain Respond Well?
Acupuncture is commonly used for:

Chronic low back pain

Muscle strain and tension

Disc bulges or herniations (without severe neurological symptoms)

Sciatica

Degenerative changes

Pain aggravated by stress or prolonged sitting

Even when imaging shows “wear and tear,” pain levels don’t always match what’s on the scan. Acupuncture treats the pain experience, not just the picture.

What to Expect From Treatment
Most people notice some real change within 3–5 treatments—less pain, better movement, or quicker recovery after activity. Chronic or long-standing pain usually requires a short series of treatments to retrain the nervous system and restore balance.

Acupuncture is often combined with:

Heat therapy

Herbal Medicine

Gentle movement recommendations

Lifestyle or ergonomic advice

This isn’t a passive “lie down and hope” approach. It’s active healing.

Is Acupuncture Safe?
When performed by a Doctor of Acupuncture, acupuncture is very safe and well-tolerated. Side effects are minimal and may include temporary soreness or mild fatigue after treatment—often a sign the nervous system is recalibrating.

The Bottom Line
Low back pain doesn’t mean your body is broken. It means something is overloaded, irritated, or stuck. Acupuncture helps restore communication between the nervous system, muscles, and joints so the body can do what it’s designed to do—heal.
If painkillers, stretching, or “waiting it out” haven’t worked, acupuncture offers a clinically supported, drug-free option that treats the root of the problem—not just the symptoms.

-- Dr. Susan Newman, Dr. Ac, RMT

Beyond January: Evidence-Based Strategies for New Year's Resolutions That Actually Stick

https://www.wellnesson1st.com/calgary-wellness-blog/beyond-january-evidence-based-strategies-for-new-years-resolutions-that-actually-stick

https://www.wellnesson1st.com/calgary-wellness-blog/beyond-january-evidence-based-strategies-for-new-years-resolutions-that-actually-stick#comments

Naturopathic Medicine

I've witnessed countless individuals set ambitious New Year's resolutions only to feel discouraged by February. The culprits? Vague goals, unrealistic timelines, and approaches that don't account for your unique physiology, and lifestyle.A one-size-fits-all approach rarely works, which is why personalized naturopathic care can be transformative.

Evidence-Based Strategies for Resolution Success

1. Set SMART Goals with a Hormonal Lens
Instead of "lose weight" or "get clear skin," create Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound goals

Example: "I will support my hormonal balance by preparing three nutrient-dense meals per week that include cruciferous vegetables, healthy fats, and quality protein for the next three months."

2. Focus on Addition, Not Just Subtraction
Rather than fixating on what to eliminate, emphasize what to add. Research on habit formation shows that building positive habits is often more sustainable than breaking negative ones.
For weight management, this might mean adding more fibre-rich vegetables, ensuring adequate protein intake, or incorporating strength training rather than solely focusing on calorie restriction. For skin health, it could mean adding specific antioxidants, staying hydrated, or implementing a gut-healing protocol.

3. Address the Root Cause
This is where naturopathic medicine truly shines. Stubborn weight gain might be linked to insulin resistance, thyroid dysfunction, or cortisol dysregulation. Persistent acne or skin issues often stem from hormonal imbalances, gut dysbiosis, or inflammatory triggers. By identifying and treating root causes rather than just symptoms, you create lasting change rather than temporary fixes.

4. Leverage the Power of Implementation Intentions
Research published in the British Journal of Health Psychology shows that people who create specific "if-then" plans are significantly more likely to follow through on health goals.

Examples:

"If it's Monday morning, then I'll take my adaptogenic herbs with breakfast."

"If I feel a stress-induced sugar craving at 3 PM, then I'll have herbal tea and a handful of almonds instead."

"If it's Wednesday evening, then I'll do my workout class before cooking dinner.

5. Prioritize Sleep and Stress Management
No resolution succeeds without addressing these foundational pillars. Poor sleep disrupts ghrelin and leptin (your hunger hormones), accelerates skin aging, and impairs insulin sensitivity. Chronic stress elevates cortisol, which can trigger weight gain around the midsection, disrupt your cycle, and manifest as inflammatory skin conditions.

6. Create Accountability and Support Systems
Studies consistently show that having support increases success rates dramatically. This doesn't just mean a workout buddy. It means working with practitioners who understand your unique physiology and can adjust your plan as needed.
Regular check-ins, lab testing to track progress objectively, and having someone to troubleshoot obstacles make all the difference between giving up and pushing through.

7. Think in 90-Day Cycles
Forget the "New Year, New You" pressure. Research on habit formation suggests it takes anywhere from 18 to 254 days to form a new habit, with an average of 66 days. Breaking your year into quarterly goals with built-in assessment points creates manageable milestones and allows for course corrections.

Your Resolutions Deserve Support
The difference between a resolution that fizzles and one that transforms your life often comes down to having the right guidance. Naturopathic medicine offers comprehensive lab testing, personalized protocols, and ongoing support that addresses your unique needs.
Whether you're struggling with stubborn weight that won't budge, skin issues that undermine your confidence, or hormonal symptoms that disrupt your daily life, there's a root cause and a solution.

Ready to Make This Your Year?
Don't navigate your health goals alone.
