Oncology Massage
Thoughtful, Compassionate Touch Through Every Stage of Cancer
with Bridget Jones, RMT
Oncology massage is something Bridget was naturally drawn to over time. Like many, she had been touched by cancer through people in her life. As her massage practice grew, she began working with clients living with cancer themselves. These experiences highlighted the importance of safe, informed, and compassionate touch, inspiring her to pursue further education in oncology massage so that she could better support clients at every stage of their journey.
For people going through cancer, the relationship with their body can change dramatically. Treatments are invasive, schedules exhausting, and decisions constant. The body becomes something that is monitored, scanned, and discussed often without much say from the person living in it. Massage therapy can offer a rare opportunity to give some of that control back.

What is Oncology Massage?
A common question is whether oncology massage is different from a “regular” massage. The answer is yes and no. Oncology massage means the therapist is educated about cancer, treatments, and their effects on the body. This knowledge allows sessions to be adapted safely and thoughtfully. Pressure, positioning, duration, and areas of focus are adjusted based on a person’s current health, treatment plan, and energy level. While the massage itself may look familiar, the approach is always individualized.

Choice and Comfort
One of the most important aspects of oncology massage is choice. People living with cancer often have little control over their bodies. Massage can be a place where preferences lead the way. Some days a client may want focused work on sore shoulders; other days, gentle touch on the feet and sometimes support through a seated session that feels more accessible. Sessions are guided entirely by what feels right in the moment, honouring each person’s changing needs.
What are the Benefits of Oncology Massage?
While massage does not treat cancer itself, it can support the person living with it by:
For some, massage brings relief. For others, comfort. For many, it offers a rare feeling of being cared for, without expectation.
- Reducing stress and anxiety
- Relieving muscle tension or discomfort
- Improving sleep
- Easing fatigue
- Reconnecting with the body

Massage at End-of-Life
Massage can also be a gentle and supportive part of end-of-life care. In these moments, massage is not about fixing or improving it is about presence. Even brief, quiet sessions can offer reassurance, calm, and connection when words feel hard to find.
Meeting You Where You Are
Whether you are seeking a full-body massage, a short, focused treatment, or simply a calm place to rest, your needs guide the experience. Bodies, needs, and preferences change sometimes daily and massage can meet those changes as they come. Oncology massage is not reserved for a few; it reflects a broader belief that everyone deserves thoughtful, compassionate massage exactly as they are.
